well my springtime spirit

has certainly been revived.

and so has my craft room!

the wreath of felt flowers I made for our front door

i covered this wooden letter c in burlap material

i planted flowers in the front yard

i just love this little bird!

now hopefully everything else

outside will start looking

spring-ish.

that would really help

with all these spring bride shoots!

but my baby is

sweet cassie, she was a huge help as always

i know it's been

about forty-eight years

since i've written a post.

and we will catch up

on all the goings on

in another post.

but for now

i will just share

about my eskimo baby.

as anyone in texas will tell you,

the pigs have flown,

hell hath frozen over,

and texas has been snowed in

for the better part of a week and 1/2.

and as anyone not in texas will tell you,

texans just don't drive in this.

some will tell you they can,

but no.

no one can.

when the city lays down on the job

and doesn't sand the roads,

not even the busiest ones,

then it's just a mess of ice

everywhere you go.

or don't go,

since they shut down the whole metroplex

and no one left home.

so we stayed home

and played in the snow.

and can i just tell you

how much sawyer

loved it?!

he has never had such delight

as when i sat him down

all bundled up

and set him free in the icy goodness.

he crawled, rolled, scooted, slid

all over the yard

giggling and squealing.

he didn't want to come in

but his little lips were turning blue.

we had to lure him back inside

with the promise of snacks.

and just when we thought/hoped

it was over.

more snow today.

so if you'll excuse me,

i'm going to go think

up some more ways

to busy ourselves inside.

being the wife of a pastor,

i cross paths with

death and sadnes

more often,

i think,

than average.

visiting people in hospitals,

hearing the saddest of stories,

feeling anger and

confusion.

the injustice and unfairness.

of parent's losing their

baby.

of babies losing their

parents.

i was taught to believe

in a big God.

who is the epitome of

love.

and goodness.

and compassion.

who conquers the

impossible.

and is merciful.

but as i prepare to take

rob's suit to the drycleaners

once more,

i have to say that

i'm questioning.

i question if it's all true.

i doubt that God is good.

that he is stronger

than these extraordinary mountains.

i can't understand how there could

ever be any higher reason

that we "can't understand

this side of heaven".

i don't believe we will

ever understand on

either side of heaven.

my heart breaks again and again,

for families i cannot help.

but deep down,

i know it.

i've felt it.

i've seen it.

God has been

good

to me.

He has been

merciful to me.

i've been outstandingly blessed.

and i'm grateful for every single

moment i've had.

i know what it is

to feel despair,

to feel hope.

i've felt the hand of God

protect me,

and help me

when i've been undeserving.

i know what it is to be loved,

truly.

deeply.

i'm holding to what i know,

even in my doubt.

i'm holding on to my family

who is a constant and ever increasing

joy

to me.

and i'm holding

with stubborn hope

to the truths that are still true

even when i'm not sure.

and i will never regret

the abandoning of what is

reasonable

(or rather unreasonable)

to live this tragically wonderful

life i was

made

to live.

sawyer is fortunate enough

to have all 4 of his

great-grand parents living,

although he hasn't gotten

to meet them all yet.

my mom and i

just took sawyer

to meet her parents

in south carolina.

she goes to see them

every year

and this time

she took us along.

i'm glad i got to share

with him the special

people & places

that are so very

near and dear

to my heart.

in the town lives.

i've finally risen to my place

on the piano in the parlor

papa's workroom,

where he makes

calligraphy magic happen

on the street where they live

we had a great trip

and loved getting to

see everyone and

have a relaxing

southern vacation.

mommyhood,

along with

end of summer events,

has kept me too busy

to keep up with this blog!

here's a recap

of some of the goings on!

rob and I had

our 2 year anniversary

we went to a fancy italian dinner

and it was like re-living a tiny part

of our honeymoon.

sawyer is 6 months old!

we celebrated his halfy birthday

with half a party and half a cake

i can't believe how fast he is growing up.

i know everyone says that,

"it goes so fast"

but i guess you can't really

understand that until you're living it

and your little baby grows up

in a flash before your eyes.

but every day is exciting and new

and more fun than i could've imagined!

rob gave me tickets for the circus

for my anniversary gift.

(i love the circus)

so we took sawyer

to his first big top

and had the best time!

that tiger guy was nuts!

i thought he was going to get eaten for sure...

i think we're going to go every year

and make it a new

family tradition!

just a couple pictures i like

of two boys i like :)

pretty much the cutest i've ever seen.

lots more going on,

but that will have to keep

sawyer and i

got rob a grill

for father's day.

so he has been

grilling us a lot

of dinners lately.

it's pretty great,

especially for me.

he made us

beer-can chicken

with corn on the cob

and asparagus.

and it

was

amazing.

seriously.

you should come over

and let him make

it for you, too.

sawyer has started

eating rice cereal.

i can't believe

he's big enough

for that,

but the first time

we tried it,

he pretty much

grabbed the spoon

out of my hand,

and started feeding

himself.

and he had a fit

when it was over.

he loves it.

i made lettuce wraps

and they were so so good

and so easy,

i wanted to share them with you.

Ingredients:
8 ounces of minced chicken mix

( which is a mix of mushrooms, water chestnuts, & minced chicken )
1 tablespoon of wok oil
1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic
2 tablespoons of diced green scallions
2 ounces of our minced chicken sauce (see below)
1 teaspoon of sesame

Minced Chicken Sauce:
1/4 cup of mushroom soy sauce
1/2 tsp of white pepper
1/4 cup of cooking rice wine
T of sugar

Heat mixture on medium high heat at low boil for about 6 to 8 minutes.

Cooking Procedure:

Heat wok until white whisk of smoke appears
Add 1 tbs of wok oil
Add garlic 5-10 seconds
Add minced chicken mix and sear
Add 1/4 ounces of minced chicken sauce, stir and incorporate.
Add 2 tbs of diced green scallions
Add 1tps of sesame oil and plate

and there you have it!

was epic.

starting with the parade

with my family,

he liked the parade

but he liked his shoes more...

i think he liked the parade the most

the next day we went to OK

to blow up fireworks

with rob's dad.

we stopped on the way

to stock up.

where to start?

so much has happened

since my last post,

i hardly know where to begin.

it has definitely been

one of the busiest, craziest,

awesomest months ever!

i guess i'll start with the biggest news:

we bought a house!!!

here are a few pictures!

we moved in july 1st.

and we love it already.

it was an enormous endeavor

to pack up every thing in just a few weeks,

with a 4 month old in one arm,

but we are so happy with this huge blessing

and are so excited to make it "ours".

so exciting!!

sawyer went to his

first baseball game!

we got to sit in a private suite

and it was so cool!

we got free food and ice cream

and an indoor/outdoor box.

sawyer preferred to use his ice cream cup as a hat

sawyer has been teething

poor thing.

complete with the drooling,

chewing on everything

(mostly his fingers ^),

and fussiness :(

those little teeth are going

to poke through any day.

the dr. said it's pretty early,

but those pesky things are comin' anyway.

i will miss that little toothless grin

but new teeth means new adventures

and i'm excited about him

learning to eat solid foods soon.

yikes! i can't believe it!

he is growing so fast!

i know everyone says that.

but i guess you can't really understand

just how fast it really goes

until you are living it.

S had his 4 month check-up

and he is doing so great!

he weighs 16.3 lbs. and is 26.5" long!

i'm so grateful for my happy, healthy baby!

we took sawyer to the zoo

for the first time!

i forgot to plug in my camera so

i didn't get to take many pictures.

they had a giraffe in a room,

and you could watch it from above

through some big windows.

and we were probably

14 feet above the ground

and it was still several feet taller than us!

only just on the other side of the glass!

i've never seen one up so closely before!

so enormous!

i couldn't get a picture

through the glass,

but it was so cool!

we made it all the way around

to the very last tiger cage

before sawyer decided

it was time to go,

but it was a gorgeous day

and aside from the

many school groups we

had to maneuver around,

it was pretty quiet and

so much fun!

i'm sure there will be

plenty of time for that later.

rob is in a 3 week mini-term

taking his very last class ever!

then he will be done with grad school

after 5 years!

i'm so proud of him!

and sawyer and I are

so excited he will be home

with us instead of in waco

all the time and driving so much!

we are going to have the best summer

being together and

having adventures :)

i love my boys!

Mother's Day

how awesome

being a mom is.

i could never have imagined

how much i would love being

sawyer's mommy

and every time i look at him,

my heart melts a little bit.

he is for sure the hugest blessing

and the best thing

that ever happened to rob and me.

we had him dedicated on sunday

which was mother's day which made it

even more special.

my first mother's day

was so special and fun.

sharing it with my own amazing mom

and sister-in-law cassie,

who is such a great mom to

kohen and judah.

Good Morning Baltimore

sawyer and i made our trip

to baltimore to visit

auntie annie.

i wish i had a picture of

his first plane ride,

but alas, i had no extra hands

to take pictures

on our journey.

but trust me,

it was quite a sight,

me lugging a suitcase,

car seat, diaper bag,

and baby

through the airport.

he did marvelously tho.

not a tear was shed on the

3 hour ride to MD.

we had a fabulous time

seeing sights and having

sister bonding time.

in the 'beauty & the beast" library

at annie's school

out on the town with S snug in his sling

we saw annie in her opera performance

and went out to celebrate

afterwards with her friends.

yes, we took sawyer to his first bar.

he had a good time.

he pretty much slept through most of it.

he loves to play airplane with annie

my dad gave him a mohawk

it's more like a cupie doll hairdo

playing on the floor with granddad

S has discovered his hands.

he clutches his fingers together and just

stares at them for 10 minutes at a time.

it's adorable!

he's growing so fast

i can hardly believe it!

but everyday is a little more

exciting and new things happen.

it's definitely my favorite ever.

we had a wonderful trip

and are so proud of annie!

she's the best!!

Easter, Finally

my nephew, Kohen is not used to
having to share his spotlight,
and we wondered how he would handle

his new baby cousin.

he ignored him completely at first.
but little by little he has started
acknowledging sawer first by
pointing and saying "bay-bee"
and now he finally gets excited
and starts yelling "yaw-yer!"
and grabbing at his carrier.
he even asked to "hold it"

a couple days ago.

first he had to point out all
the animals and their sounds
on Sawyer's onesie.

then he poked sawyer's eyes.

of course.

he was so proud of himself

(that blinking thing he's doing

i think is flirting)

and now he will have to share

just a little more.

kohen's new baby brother was born!

poor cassie, she is a champ!

48+ hours of labor,

i can't believe

my sweet baby

is already

a month old!

the time is already

flying.

it's funny

it seemed to be

dragging so slowly

before he was born,

and as soon as he got here

it started zooming by!

yesterday,

i laid him on his playtime mat

while i attempted to dry my hair

after one of the very few showers

i've gotten lately,

and i hear him making

all these little baby cooing noises

so i run in there to see this:

he smiles!!

and he makes tiny

sort of-laughing sounds

and it's just the best thing ever!

i still can't believe

he's mine

and i get to keep him.

in other news,

my sister in law, cassie

still hasn't had her baby yet.

she's 41 weeks now.

just don't want to come out!

and it seems that spring

is finally here!

after that crazy little

snowy speedbump

last weekend,

it's warm and sunny

and the trees in the backyard are

blooming those pretty white flowers

that are my favorite.

it even smells like spring!

8 pounds.

20 3/4 inches.

i don't really know

how to tell you

how incredibly

hard, terrifying,

amazing, exhausting

and wonderful

the last few days have been.

if you've become a parent,

then you know.

but i am so

blessed beyond

what i can ever hope

to understand.

my little family

is healthy and home

and i'm so grateful

for all the family and friends

who have showered us with

love and generosity since

sawyer's arrival.

i am a very lucky girl

Sawyer seems to be

exhibiting signs

of stubbornness

already.

he just won't

show us his little face!

somehow, in my mind,

i really thought he would

be here by now.

i'd never make it

this long.

but alas,

here we are,

still more pregnant

than i ever thought

one could be!

my sister is in town,

and she has taken up

the role of captain

on team "get that nephew borned".

we have walked and walked,

we ate spicy foods,

she keeps talking to my belly

and insisting that

he show himself.

and she tried

to make me do lunges.

(yikes!)

not going to happen.

we even bought,

contemplated,

poured,

and then discarded

the castor oil concoction.

(my sister has pictures of all this

on her camera, but i don't have any.

i've been just sure if i take my camera

out of my bag i'll forget it

then we won't have it at the hospital...)

anyway, all that to say,

he's still cozy in his little

habitat and doesn't seem

all that interested in leaving.

but i have my 40 week appointment

today.. so we shall see.

hopefully (please God)

he will change his mind

and we can all meet him very soon!

project nursery, part 2

rob was out of town

for a week, and so

i stayed with my parents

because it makes me nervous

to be alone, being this pregnant.

so i took the opportunity

to get tons of baby stuff done!

i think i got myself

a little in over my head with

this bedding, but it's finally

turning out extremely cute,

if i do say so myself :)

i started with

a pile of fabrics

and some drawings.

i made stencils out of the drawings,

and traced out the animal shapes

cut out hundreds of tiny shapes and pieces

then ironed them onto backing,

my awesome parents stayed up late

and helped me cut out the

hundreds of tiny pieces again.

then i ironed each layer

onto themselves to make the animals,

and then spent 3 days zigzag sewing

over the whole thing,

then sewing them together

to make the crib bumper pads.

they aren't completely finished,

i still have to sew little knots

for the eyes and the strings to tie

them to the crib, but mostly

they're done!!

i put them in the crib for a little test run

so there you go!

i think the little guy

is going to love his bed!

i also made the letters

that are laying in the crib in

those pictures, i just

haven't gotten the hooks

to hang them on the wall yet.

i made them out of

wooden letters that i painted

white on the sides,

and scrapbook paper

i've also gotten the rest of

the furniture put together

he's already got a nice little library going.

(he takes after his daddy that way ;)

i put together the changing table,

and got all his little

blankets and various cloths

(babies come with so many cloths!)

all folded and ready for him,

plus tons of itty bitty diapers in the bins.

so, many late nights,

a whole bag of sonic ice,

and a bowl of pistachios later,

he's got a bed and a room all

ready and waiting for his arrival

in 5 short weeks!

again!

wonderful christmas

with both

my families.

first, at rob's family's.

we had to make

a quick exit

from OKC than

we had planned

because of the weather,

but we made it

home safely

through

the blizzard

for christmas

at my parents'.

our christmas puppies

kohen raked in the presents.

rob got me a wii and a princess game

i was just a tad excited... ;)

for rob,

i had the book he wrote

for NaNoWriMo

printed into a real book.

my brother and i

made tons and tons

of christmas cookies

the candy cane cookies

are my favorite

i've been getting a lot

of quality sister time

in while annie is here.

we went out on the town

with the top down

because as you know,

texas is the only place

where you can need your

A/C one day

and then it snows

the next.

my oldest friend

Lydia was in town

from CA.

i've missed her dearly

and i'm so glad we got

to hang out,

even if only for

a couple hours.

rob and i had

a fancy dinner

at the melting pot

as a christmas gift

and our waitress

brought us a special

baby celebration desert!

now that rob has finished

school for the semester,

we tackled the nursery.

it's quite possible that

i am neck deep in

what i've learned is called

"nesting".

we painted the whole room

in 3 days and today we put

together the crib

that has been sitting in

a giant box in our

living room for weeks.

i also may be a little biased,

but i'm basically sure

it's the cutest nursery

in the makings ever.

i've neglected you.

i have no excuse

other than

just too busy!

and not the busy

busy getting too huge

by 8:30 every night,

on thanksgiving!

this was my first

time not having thanksgiving

at home with m y family,

but instead at rob's family's

in Oklahoma.

it was kinda hard for me

not being home,

but I really had a good time

with them.

I have

wonderful

in-laws.

i didn't take as many

pictures as i wish i had,

but here are a few.

we did spend friday with my family.

and even put the star on top!

of recent weeks.

firstly, the most

mind-blowingly

amazing concert

i've ever been to:

U2.

us at the show, it was outside.

(sidenote: ipod guy behind me spilled his beer alllll over me, then pretended he never realized it. lovely.)

the set was just, insanely phenominal!

so huge!

it takes 8 days to set it up,

and 100 semi-trucks to

bring it all in.

we had my family over

for halloween.

we live in a great neighborhood

with tons of kids so

we thought it'd be fun to

give out candy

and take my nephew around.

my parents made fabulous

caramel apples

the doggies dressed up.

(don't judge, it was hilarious)

we carved pumpkins

before. isn't that a huge pumpkin?!

here are all our pumpkins out on the porch.

this one is mine.

we took kohen trick or treating,

he was a safari guy in a jeep.

SO cute! he was a huge hit.

Cassie is a genius and made

his costume in one morning!

kohen skyped with auntie annie

so she could see his costume.

it was a grand time!

halloween when sawyer

will be here!

i'm sure he'll be so

cute in his tiny costume!

i'm helping plan

one of the rooms

at our church's fall festival.

it's pretty crazy involved...

they really go all out

for this thing.

it makes me excited

to have my own kid(s?)

to take to a carnival

someday.

speaking of kids,

we made our first

baby purchase this weekend.

we bought a crib!

i had no idea how

complicated cribs could be!

i thought i knew which one i wanted

till we got to the store

and the lady started telling me

how "this one is a 9-in-1 crib!

it turns into 18 different kinds of beds

and eventually becomes a queen size bed!"

and plus they all come in

4 or 5 different shades of wood.

and it was quite overwhelming.

it's realllly hard for me to make

purchasing decisions anyway

without adding in 43 more options...

i mean, it's a baby bed!

i won't bore you with details,

but after an hour and a half

we made it out of the store

with the mother of all cribs.

and by that i mean,

brown and sturdy,

and has a matching

changing table.

plus after some successful

craigslist-ing on my part,

we ended up saving almost $200!

we are totally excited to

convert my office into a nursery

over the christmas break.

i finally chose fabrics to make

the bedding, it is going to be

so cute! i'll show you some

pictures as that goes along.

i also drew up the mural

i'm going to paint on the

wall behind the crib.

i'm pretty excited.

sawyer is going to love his room!

i think cassie,

my sister in law,

is going to go with me

sometime soon to do our

baby registries!

she is due 3 weeks after me

with their 2nd baby, also a boy!

3 boys in 2 years,

whew! my mom is going to be

so tired ;)

we met with and hired

our doula also this week.

she is awesome!

and i'm totally excited

that she's going to help

us make our baby's

grand entrance amazing.

i'm just really excited!

crazy.

i got a job,

of this year.

being a nanny.

it's been in the

works for a while

and it's all turned

out nicely!

my sister

came to visit,

family time.

lots of rain.

keep getting in my

back door.

our U2 concert

turned into a

trip to the emergency room.

it was terrifying,

and harrowing,

and the #1 scariest

event of my life.

however,

everything and everyone

is OK.

my husband is named

after his grandfather,

as is his father.

so when we discovered

we are going to have

a son, the question

of course, was

do we name him

Robert Stephen the 4th

or not?

the only thing about

keeping it going

is what we would call him.

because Rob goes by Rob,

and his dad goes by Steve,

so that's pretty much all the options...

Then we remembered that

his gradfather's middle name wasn't

stephen, it was just

the middle initial S.

So really, we could come up with

a new name that starts with S

and call him that!

that would still count

as Robert S. the 4th.

so that's what we did.

so ladies and gentlemen,

our son's name is:

Robert Sawyer.

we'll cal him sawyer,

and i guess so will you!

on a different

but just as exciting note,

we both felt him move

yesterday for the

first time!

it was so crazy, i had

just been telling my mom

yesterday morning we

hadn't felt him move at all

and i didn't know if that

was normal or not

at 21 weeks...

and then last night we were

sitting on the couch,

watching tv and

all of a sudden,

he just started kicking around!

i grabbed rob's hand and

put it on my stomach and

he said oh my gosh!!

it was very exciting,

and also very weird.

i still can't believe it,

but i also cannot wait!

i went to a consignment shop

called kid 2 kid,

you can get tons of

great hardly used stuff

for next to nothing!

i was just going to look,

but then of course,

i just can't get over how

tiny they are!

well, i promise

that not every post

will be about the baby,

but lately,

other than throwing up,

it's what's going on!

there he is!

in all his

it would be a girl,

and i think rob was too.

so we were shocked

when the sono-tech

said it was a boy!

i couldn't quite

grasp it at first...

but now, of course,

we are so excited!

we had each decided

on the first thing

we wanted to buy

the baby after we found

out what it was.

so right after we found out,

we bought him his first shoes

(my idea, and they are SO cute!)

and his first comic book

(rob's idea. spiderman ;) )

so now we

are getting used to

the idea of

having a son.

well really,

i went to visit

my sister, Annie

at her new home in

Baltimore, MD.

She moved there last

month to go graduate school

at the Peabody Conservatory,

the music school of Johns Hopkins.

we had so much fun,

parts of town,

eating fancy deserts,

drinking coffee at little

outside bistro tables.

i really loved the city

and i'm just a tiny bit

jealous at her

"glamorous downtown life".

there was a concert going on by the monument.

her apartment is the one with the red awning.

front beds a while back,

and now they're taking over!

it's that time of year...

my brother and sis-in-law

finished moving into

their new house that they built

and it is AMAZING.

they made molds to pour the concrete counter tops

putting in the hardwood floors.

and we just had the best time ever!

i finally got around

lantana in the front beds.

banana walnut bread.

1 tsp. baking powder

1-1/4 cups mashed bananas

1 tbsp. canola oil

1/3 cup milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup walnuts

bake at 350 degrees 45 minutes.

Monday we arrived

in NYC, checked into

our hotel which turned out

to be itsy bitsy and

somewhat crazy,

so we moved.

went to a Jimmy Eat World

concert in the upper west side,

i broke my ankle,

walked on it the whole next day

till i couldn't anymore,

went to the ER,

got crutches,

went to a broadway show,

met lauren graham there

next day to Ellis Island and

Statue of Liberty,

went to 30 rock

and sat in on a test taping

of the Late Night show with

Jimmy Fallon

we went to our conference

(the international arts movement)

and met some amazing people,

some being:

makoto fujimura, helen sung,

matt kearney, billy collins

amazing.

we went to

3 more broadway shows,

saw more celebrities,

(nathan lane,

matthew broderick,

and more)

rode the subway a lot,

walked

(or crutched rather)

a lot,

got stuck there

because of a blizzard,

but we are home.

and it is much warmer here.

thank goodness...

rob and i

found a new spot

to hang out.

(well really rob,

i just follow him

around). ;)

it's a little coffee

shop near our

new house called

"it's a grind".

it's a very cool place.

both rob and i

do a lot of our work

remotely on

our lappies

(he doesn't call them

that, just me).

that is one of the things

i love about our relationship

and our jobs.

we can sit

for hours next

to each other,

with our work,

headphones,

and not talk to each other,

making our paychecks,

and yet still spend time

together.

not every day, obviously.

but sometimes.

and it's nice.

here's a little

glimpse of what

i've been working on:

i shot a wedding

last weekend.

i didn't know

until i got there

that it was actually

an elopement!

just the minister,

the couple,

and me.

it was an experience.

the couple wanted to

elope, but

still have a

real wedding

ceremony.

and that's exactly

what it was.

also i had an

engagement shoot

last week.

the couple

was so cute

in their matching

outfits.

well that's about it.

back to work!

lately

it has been a

crazy couple of weeks!

we moved into

our new house

last weekend.

so i have been

endlessly unpacking

and settling in.

we also got

a new puppy!

Lola

she is too cute.

she and sherbotsky

are already the best

of friends.

they play, and eat,

and even

nap together.

and we have this great

backyard for them now.

wondeful.

well that is about

all for now.

i do not like

days like today.

the constant

almost-rain,

not freezing,

but still

not any easier

to drive in

because of my

wee little car.

too cold,

too wet,

too yucky

for my taste.

i would rather have

any day than

a yucky tuesday.

but then again,

fog has it's way

of making things

beautiful in their

yucky-ness,

and it is cozy

as long as you

can stay

inside...

and a little

puddle jumping

is called for

now and then...

and of course

there's always

some apple cider

to warm things up,

and i do have a

spotty dotty

umbrella.

so i guess it's not

so bad.

just be sure to have

some fuzzy

gloves.

fuzzy gloves

are a must.
